Bell Mountain

Abundant granite glades and outcrops within the cover of hardwoods and evergreens gives way to granite bluffs near the summit that allow hikers a birds-eye view of Missouri's Ozarks.
From the Highway A trailhead you will climb a series of rocky, washed out switchbacks to a section of ups and downs on the Ozark Trail before coming to the connector trail that leads further up the mountain to the Bell Mountain Trail (BMT). The connector trail is littered with granite glades that are perfect for breaks. Once on the BMT the trail flattens out to a slight upward climb through a mainly hardwood forest. 300 yards from the summit the trail gets steep with loose rocks that could easily turn your ankle. At the summit you'll find a campsite and the survey marker for the mountain along with five concrete pedestals that, I can only guess, used to support a fire tower. Follow the trail for 15 yards for the first bluff or 200 yards beyond the first spur for another bluff.
The BMT is a looped trail with another connector to the CC Rd trailhead (37.666225,-90.85179). We bushwhacked up the mountain from Highway A and followed the ridge around to the OT connector/BMT junction. On return from the summit, we followed the south portion of the BMT to the OT and back to the parking area at the Highway A trailhead (37.62562,-90.9112).
