Spy Rock

A huge view in a small package is the theme for this short day hike. Beginning at the Montebello Fish Hatchery, the trail begins climbing an uneventful private, gravel road with nice houses scattered about for about a mile. (Don't worry about the private part as the residents allow hikers, not cars, to connect with the Appalachian Trail.) The road eventual comes to an end and a smaller log road veers off to the left were a rather odd, knotty tree stands on the corner. A bit further up and past a gate, you'll find the sign marking the AT and pointing you left towards Spy Rock. Another 1/2 mile and the brush clears out to a grassy area littered with fire rings. At this point you can't help but notice the bottom of Spy Rock. Take your time finding a suitable route up the rock. It is steep and is extremely slick when wet. Once you've conquered the climb take in the beautiful, unobstructed scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It is said that Confederate troops would use this rock to keep watch for Union movement, hence the name... Spy Rock.
